Explanations:
1 - Episode [Football, Feminism and You] - This moment of them, talking to each other and admitting that both of them have been wrong and apologizing to each other is what made me go, hmmm, this is an interesting dynamic. I didnt start shipping them here as yet, but you could say this when I began to pay notice and it's also the first instance where they share a meaningful (to me) Milady, Milord moment.
2 & 3 - Episode [Debate 109] - It was this episode that sealed the deal for me. And it's not just because they share an epic kiss at the end, but rather because it's the first time they work together as a team and also figure out that maybe what they have between them is not just platonic. It's here that they recognize each other as attractive, even tho their own feelings do not blossom until quite later on.
4 - Episode [Introduction to Statistics] - They barely share any screentime together in this episode, and yet, this is few seconds of them dancing together is one of my favourite scenes. Just two people having fun together!
5 - Episode [Romantic Expressionism] - Technically, the the study group all do have chemistry with each other. But I love this moment where Jeff and Annie lock eyes and it's one more moment where they recognize the other as attractive, perhaps more intensely. Also Jeff and Britta first try to break-up Annie and Vaughn cause they see themselves as parents/guardians for the younger group members. However, the end of the episode reveals that the dynamics between all of them could very easily be considered more romantic than familial!
6 - Episode [Pascal's Triangle Revisited] - This kiss ya'll. The first time I saw it, I stopped functioning for a moment. Yes, both of them are running from their romantic problems. But also at the same time, all the attraction has been building up and it culminates in a moment that sets course for their journey of attraction.
7 - Episode [Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design] - We are in the second season now and the fallout from the kiss is that while Annie is more into Jeff, Jeff on the other hand feels awkward cause a) Annie is still a teenager at this point and 2) Jeff himself is nowhere near as mature as he needs to be to let Annie down gently. In this episode, everything seems fun and games until this moment, where Annie's pointing a fake gun at Jeff. Obviously, it's all supposed to be acting. But Annie's dialogue here felt truthful and emotional. "After we kissed, I waited all summer to see you. You buried me like a shameful secret. What's the matter, Jeff? Afraid crazy Annie would go crazy for you? Well, guess what. Annie's got a gun." Interestingly, Jeff's dialogue before Annie's goes along the lines of - when you love people, you take them as they are. This was such a gut-wrenching moment and I feel like it's a highlight in their dynamic because it begins the start of a repeating theme - Annie being ready for more but Jeff always pulling back.
8 - Episode [Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design] - From the same episode as 7 and here, Annie and Jeff look like they are chilling out and Jeff confirms that what Annie was supposed to say during their little act is not the same as what she said. She went off-script but here, Annie clams up and just plays it off as being convincing. When the blanket fort gets pulled down, Annie instinctively leans towards Jeff and Jeff seemingly considers Annie in a very UST filled moment that goes as quickly as it comes.
9 - Episode [Asian Population Studies] - Annie seems to move on from Jeff and instead has a crush on man named Rich, who is similar in age to Jeff, but superior in every which way in that he's kind, well-loved, handsome and obviously happy with who he is. In many ways, he feels like the person Annie deserves to be with because he's mostly a mirror to her own personality and the person she wants to become. Jeff should be happy, but instead he finds that he's grappling with jealousy. Annie does call him out on it but once again, Jeff makes no move. He's not ready to confront what he's been feeling.
10 - Episode - [Intro to Political Science] - In this episode, both of them compete against each other for the post of student body president and here is where I think we begin to see that Annie is just as capable as Jeff, if not more. She's coming into her own as a person and Jeff is forced to begin to acknowledge that fact. Also, it highlights a very sweet dynamic in their relationship. No matter what the status of it is currently, both of them respect each other and feel affection for each other. And they value each other's opinion dearly.
11- Episode [Paradigms of Human Memory] - This episode opens up a can of worms, especially the fact that Jeff and Britta have been hooking up for the entire duration of season 2. We get a montage of moments called the 'Annie of It All' where Annie and Jeff share what could be either platonic or romantic moments. Annie views it as romantic, but Jeff see's them as platonic and Annie does not respond well to this revelation.
12 - Episode [Geography of Global Conflict] - The third season begins from here. In this episode, other people comment on the nature of Jeff and Annie's strange closeness/UST and it also highlights a tendency of Jeff to get angry on the behalf of Annie. But the end of episode forces him to acknowledge that Annie no longer a young girl, she's a young woman who is capable and brilliant and more than ready to tackle the world on her own terms.
13 - Episode [Remedial Chaos Theory] - Multiple timelines and multiple ways in which Jeff and Annie could be together. Jeff is still grappling here and so is Annie as well. The attraction is very present but neither of them want to do more about it.
14 - Episode [Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps] - I like this episode simply because Annie displays her ability to fight tooth and nail, if she should. And she's also not just a person who likes happily ever-afters. In fact, Annie could very well be a villain in her own right. Everyone in the study group is rightfully scared by Annie Edison, because when push comes to shove, she will cut a bitch if she needs to.
15 - Episode [Conventions of Space and Time] - I prefer to not think about season 4 because it honestly feels like a misstep but in this episode, I like how we get a glimpse into Annie's mind. Though she and Jeff are good friends, she still nurses romantic feelings for him while Jeff may have them but he's trying to avoid them. Jeff is such a strong opposer of marriage, while Annie on the other hands feels differently. However, he does let her know that if they were ever to get married, he wouldn't be cheating on Annie with other women, a surefire sign of the fact that Jeff too has toyed with the thoughts of a future with Annie.
16 - Episode [Basic Intergluteal Numismatics] - The study group is on the hunt for the Asscrack Bandit and even Dean Pelton who's 100% focused on Jeff all the time comments on the fact that Jeff and Annie like to pair off in order to act on their feelings without having to acknowledge them. Both of them are painfully aware of this but do not do anything about it. However, I like that the episode closes out with them having a heartfelt hug.
17 - Episode [Basic Sandwich] - The end of season 5 and a very thematically and emotionally significant moment for Jeff and Annie. As the study group scrabbles to save Greendale, Jeff and Britta announce their intention to get married, a fact that hurts Annie very much though she does not allow anyone except Abed to see it, who in turn consoles her very sweetly. Perhaps what Abed says does impact Annie because by the end of the episode, she makes a speech that seems directed towards everyone but is also particularly directed towards Jeff.
"We have to respect each other enough to let each other want what we want, no matter how transparently self-destructive or empty our desires may be."
Annie heartbreakingly acknowledges that she's giving up on her own feelings and at the same time, she also lets Jeff know that he's entitled to his own choices no matter how they impact him. Basically, Annie is done trying to build any semblance of a relationship and also acknowledges the damage her own feelings are doing to her. She's ready to move on but she also bears no ill-will towards Jeff.
Ironically, soon after this speech, when Jeff needs to use a blast of human passion to get them out of the place, it's the force of his feelings for Annie that gets the door to open. [ A fact that Dan Harmon later confirmed in the interview].
18 - Episode [Intro to Recycled Cinema] - Ironically, when shooting a ridiculous movie, it is Annie who says 'I Love You' but not with the emotions that are supposed to be attached to it. The confession is voiced as a question, which is an indication that her feelings for Jeff have taken a backseat.
19 - Episode [Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television] - All of season 6 has Jeff sort spiral into alcoholism because it's almost time for the study group to graduate and he's not coping too well with that fact. In the final episode of the season, and the show, it is now Jeff who nurses dreams of a romantic future with Annie. But Annie does not want a future with him now. Her future her furthering her career in Forensics. And Jeff is now aware that he cannot be the one holding Annie back, not after she gave him multiple chances to do the opposite.
20 - Episode [Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television] - Jeff finally confesses his feelings to Annie. He also acknowledges that he let her go. He and Annie share one last kiss, which shows us that there's still a lingering attraction [and emotions] between them. Only this time, there's no clear idea of the outcome. The hope for a future between them is left up in the air. Maybe the get together [what I want to believe] or maybe they dont. But Jeff has finally comes to terms with his feelings for Annie and he matures enough to acknowledge it, a far cry from the Jeff Winger of season 1.

- What I wanted to do at first was make like 5 icon for 4 otps. I made 5 for Jeff and Annie and promptly fell down a rabbit-hole of my own love for them. And thats how I ended up with 40 icons.

absolutelybatty's tutorial on text here so that I could create half-way decent text icons without devolving into a sobbing mess. - All the sober/brownish/grungy icons are me messing around with gradient maps and the Noise filter. The blobby soft icons are me messing around with Box Blur/Lens Blur. After 11 years or so of mucking about with graphics, I discovered Smart Sharpen. And I'm appalled at not having looked into it earlier.

I tried picking faves but ended up picking every single icon with text. So lets go with that. I love them all! <3
Really amazing text work in this set. I don't usually associate clear and blocky text with your icons, did I just forget that or is it something you don't do often? It works really well with the soft backgrounds and comic-like coloring you chose for them. <3

Date: Tuesday, 4 May 2021 05:37 pm (UTC)WHERE TO START??? Ok, 2 is sooo gorgeous, love the color combination and the texture use is spot on, and the text arrangemet is fantastic too, the placement of "ass" is so clever cause it's balanced out by their height difference.
5 is glorious in all is blocking. That is so many blocks yet the icon has a super clean look, probably because of the negative space. Plus again a fantastic color combination, so vibrant and eye-catching!
7 is all kinds of gorgeous, love the font you used for "secret", and the shiny lighting is sublime!
9 is another spectacular icon, with another super fun font combination. Great use of the target texture too.
The clean negative space and extra shiny light use on 14 are wonderful, and I love the grunge in 16 (you're officially the master of colorful grunge icons!). Speaking of grunge, I LOVE the texture use in 12 and am amazed at the fact that you got a grungy animated icon to look this HQ, I feel like I can't use aaaany textures in animated icons if I don't want them to mess up the quality extremely badly. I also love the sense of depth you get into icons like 4, 11 and 15, so glowy and vibrant!
The extras are great too, I especially adore 22 and 23 (amazing texture use!).
I've only seen a few episodes of this show, a long time ago and too few eps to find any ships yet, but I liked it a lot and enjoyed reading your explanations! You're really good at pinpointing where the shippy feels come from and this dynamic sounds very compelling :) Thanks so much for entering this wonderful set, and I'm sorry to get here so late, these days of ending the previous challenge and starting a new one are always so extra busy.
